PEERING INTO THAT DARKNESS
“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;”
– The Raven
There is a place in the human mind
A dark place
A secret place
A guarded place
One that walls itself
Inaccessible to the conscious self
It is yet deeper than
The levels of forbidden desires
And nightmares of fears whose
Names must not be spoken
These must be traversed
Just to reach it’s walls
One brave or foolish or mad
Enough to make that journey
Might find a door, a window
Or a crack by which to peer
Into that place, to peer deep
Into that darkness
He or she might even return
With an intact soul, or
Hopelessly shattered

Bob Wertzler is retired from almost twenty years in the mental health field in California and Arizona. There are times the title, “Recovering Therapist”, seems to fit. In 2006 he retired to move to Western North Carolina to help and become primary care giver for his father who had developed Dementia. Before all that, there was work at various times as a soldier (US Army 1967-70), community organizer, cab driver, welfare case worker, wooden toy maker, carpenter, warehouse worker, and other things. He relates to a line in a Grateful Dead song, “What a long, strange trip its been.”
