The Wolf Inside-Sarah Doughty

“It was only a dream, but I still knew
the soul behind your eyes wasn’t yours.
Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”
It was only a dream, but I still knew the soul behind your eyes wasn’t yours. Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, you watched me with a predator’s eyes. I was enthralled and terrified at the same time, not knowing what to expect. Not knowing if you were truly there every now and again when I saw how the sunlight made your blue eyes even more striking. And though he didn’t hurt me while living under your skin — this time — nothing was stopping him. Not even me. Isn’t it strange? Even in my dreams I’m frozen into submission, waiting for what was to come.
While my love for you
will never change,
I can’t help but wonder
if you’re the one
looking back at me.

Sarah Doughty – Who, what, is behind those eyes?

    1. Behind those eyes was the man that abused me — my father. After a very unpleasant experience with EMDR (a specialized form of therapy for people with PTSD), the image of my father in a particularly bad memory blurred into my husband. From that point, my memories tend to shift back and forth between the two, even though my husband is nothing like my father. This was written after a nightmare where the person in front of me was my husband, but at times, I could tell it wasn’t really him.

You caught the essence of that in the poem.

Another special thanks to Heretics, Lovers, And Madmen for publishing this piece. How our minds in dreams can manipulate our fears is quite powerful.

  5. We are sometimes, attracted to what’s dangerous, and not good for us, but, that’s just how infatuation sometimes worked…And there’s nothing we can do about it.
