I am a small thing now
I am a thing you won’t even notice at first
I am whisper as a passerby brushes up against you and doesn’t say a word
I am the twitch in your hand as your fist balls instinctively
I burn small fires in your subconscious
I am the wind that turns your head when you smell the ocean and haven’t been near water in years
You can almost see my face when you look in the mirror
You turn away and rationalize yourself back into uncomfortable skin
I am your wild core
Like lava I will eventually pour from you
You adjust your glasses and fix your strand of unruly hair
I see you practice your “professional” smile before you walk out the door
You can hear my laugh and try to shut me away
“Come to me woman of passion, hear my siren song. Crash against my shore and bleed into the sand. Love with abandon and cry for closure. Scream into the heavens, they have almost forgotten you are there.”
You shiver at my words and put the key into the ignition of your reliable square car
I am with you through your day
My head hangs heavy as I watch the light in our eyes going out
Your day was long my darling
Your wine stained teeth need brushing and your bed is calling
I am going to slip into you
I will save us both. I fill your slumber with the memories we share. I slip between your thighs and touch the lust you once wore like a red leather dress. You shift and bite your lip in your sleep. Your knees meet and your hips twist. I continue my path. I run your fingers through sand and tickle your toes with the grass of our barefooted youth. I swirl inside you and you can feel the skirt your mother gave you swaying against your skin. There is a tear falling and you turn to your side. Your pillow a poor substitute for the arms you so desperately need around you. You’re going to wake soon so I hold you. I am your love. I am your passion. I am your soul yearning for connection. Come to me my love and remember me like I remember you. Come back to me and watch as the light returns and your shoulders are no longer weary.
I will wait for you
I will listen
But please
Come back
