She, by Candice Louisa Daquin
SHE wasn’t very popular because
she didn’t need a man
she didn’t want a man
she wasn’t attracted to men
so they resented her and decried her and ignored her
and she was still okay
despite the women who did need a man
instead of seeing that difference can flourish
telling her she was strange and unnatural
sticking together like unchewable toffee
ignoring her, who they thought inexplicable
(howcanshenotfindmenattractive? whatiswrongwithherdidshegrowupwithwolves?)
so she was alone
and she was still okay
SHE didn’t need people but it did not mean
she would not like to be among people and part of them
but her difference and how she did not want
the same things
meant she lived perpetually on the outside
sometimes SHE wondered what it would be like
if children inherited a world that
did not prescribe exclusion
did not tell women they had no control over their bodies
did not tell men they were superior and could rule
did not put men as the prize for everyone to bow to
did not tuck older women away in cupboards to gather dust
did not condemn women who loved other women
and had no time at all for men
not because they hadn’t met a good man
but because a good man was the last thing they needed
and she was still okay
because that’s what she had learned early on
to stand even when they tell you to sit
and sit when they tell you to stand
BE yourself even in the face of everyone conforming
because SHE was a power to be reckoned with
the only thing that could undo her
was the gentle flick of a thin wrist attached to HER
arm and the way it wove in and out of moonlight
over her head, and down her sides, and into her soul
like an indigo night bird
